Egypt has issued an ultimatum to Israel: Avigdor Lieberman, the choice of Prime Minister designate Benjamin Netanyahu to be the next Foreign Minister, must apologize for a speech made to the Knesset in which he said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could come to Israel or "go to hell." Cairo, which considers Lieberman`s statements an affront to Mubarak`s honor, has threatened a diplomatic crisis should the apology not be forthcoming. Discussions on the wording of an apology are reportedly already taking place between the two countries.
IDF soldier Gilad Schalit has been in Hamas captivity for 1000 days. Thousands demonstrated tonight for Gilad`s release in the protest tent set up in early March across from the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem. Speakers at the event included Gilad`s father Noam, who expressed gratitude at the widespread support the family has received from the nation, and said the family`s life had become nightmare and uncertainty. Noam said Prime Minister Olmert could still bring Gilad home, and promised his son that they would not rest until he returned. The Olmert government had hoped to secure Shalit’s release before it is replaced by a right-wing government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, but negotiations broke down Tuesday over disagreements on the list of prisoners Hamas is demanding in return for Schalit.
In East Jerusalem, police prevented Palestinian-Authority sponsored events from taking place. The purpose of the events was to declare Jerusalem "the capital of Arab culture." Police, acting under the orders of Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter, arrested at least twenty organizers of the events. In Bethlehem, which is under Palestinian control, an event took place as planned. Under existing interim agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, PA-sponsored events are prohibited in Israel.
A 21-year-old Israeli man was killed in a sand-boarding accident in Ika, Peru today. The Foreign Ministry said the family had been notified, and that the Israeli consul in Peru would travel to Ika to arrange for the man’s body to be returned to Israel.
And finally: Singer/songwriter Michal Amdursky has come out with a solo album, as well as a concert tour to promote it. The 34-year-old multi-talented Amdursky, also a dancer and actress, recently divorced from her musician husband, Assaf Amdursky, after 12 years of marriage. The divorce is the subject of some of the songs in the album, in which she sings of finally emerging from her ex-husband`s shadow.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert explains why Schalit deal fell through
Dramatic night at Schalit family tent
And foreign soccer star on Israeli team claims he`s Jewish
Welcome to Jerusalem online.com news
Negotiations over the release of captured idf soldier gilad Shalit have broken down. Israel apparently agreed to release 325 of 450 Palestinian prisoners Hamas demanded be set free, but not all to the Palestinian authority. One of the terrorists Israel agreed to free is Abdullah barghouti, responsible for attacks within Israel which left dozens dead. Others include the gangleader who sent terrorists to the Park Hotel in which dozens were killed by a suicide bomber during a Passover Seder. The head of Israeli intelligence agencies said capitulation to Hamas demands would cause serious damage to Israel`s security. Some say public pressure in Israel to release Shalit caused serious damage to Israel`s bargaining position, leading Hamas to harden its stance. Shalit`s father Noam met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and said that Olmert told him that the negotiations would continue.
Olmert told a press conference that Hamas` hardened stance is what is preventing a deal from being reached. He said Israel`s offer was generous, including release of terrorists with Israeli blood on their hands. Olmert said Israel would not offer a better deal and would not agree to release any more terrorists than it has already agreed to free. He called Hamas murderous and inhuman, saying Israel has its red lines it will not cross. Olmert said he is often asked by world leaders, why are you willing to suffer strategically in order to save a lone soldier. Olmert answered them that the value that motivates the Jewish people is mutual caring. He added that Israel will not let up in its efforts to bring Shalit home.
Meanwhile, a nerve-wracking night in the Shalit family protest tent outside the prime ministers residence, as they heard the reports that the negotiations over their son`s release broke down. Dozens continued to show their support for the family`s struggle. Noam Shalit had to admit finally that the Olmert administration would not be the one to finalize a deal for his son`s freedom. Noam Shalit called on the government to exert more pressure on Hamas to agree to a deal, referring perhaps to proposals to imprison Hamas security prisoners under the same conditions that Gilad Shalit is being held.
The world economic crisis is affecting many sectors, including holocaust survivors such as Esther. Esther`s son lost his job and he can no longer afford to support her. The story is similar for dozens of holocaust survivors in Israel. There has been a 40 percent rise in requests for financial help from holocaust survivors.
Croatian player Tbertko Kahle , who began playing for Israeli team Beitar Jerusalem several years ago, is claiming that he is Jewish from his mother`s side, and that he deserves citizenship according to Israel`s law of return. Kahel says he wants to stay in Israel forever. s/u
