The International Light Festival kicked off on Wednesday in Jerusalem, displaying spectacular artworks that use light in a variety of creative ways.

Many of the installations make clever use of the city's ancient architecture. There are also video projections, puppet shows and an impressive fire dance. This year, the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem's reunification will be marked by a special video and sound display set against the Old City walls.

Held each June since 2009, the festival drew hundreds of thousands of visitors in previous years, with both local and foreign artists taking part.
