A hacker who managed to steal the new season of the popular Netflix series Orange is the New Black demanded a ransom payment from the streaming company. However, Netflix refused to pay the ransom, prompting the hacker to make good on his threat and release the new season before the scheduled date.

It is still unclear how much the hacker demanded but after his demand was not met, at least 10 of the 13 episodes found their way to a torrent site. The hacker has only been identified as The Dark Overlord.

The fifth season of the hit series was supposed to air on June 9. The Dark Overlord also threatened to release episodes from ABC, Fox and National Geographic shows.

Netflix contacted the authorities once it received the ransom demand. According to the initial investigation, the hacker managed to obtain the episodes by hacking the network of a small distribution firm that works with one of the studios. The breach occurred about two months ago.

The FBI and other authorities are involved in the investigation. Netflix fears that the premature release of the full season will not only harm its revenue but also discourage potential new customers from subscribing to the site.
