A senior Israeli official attacked US criticism of planned building in the West Bank Settlement of Shvut Rachel Daled.  "The reaction is out of proportion. This is just a cover up for unilateral moves by Obama." Residents of Amona, who are to move there, claim that the planned units will be ready only in about 4 years.

Only one day after a rocket exploded in the city of Sderot, a Red Alert siren was sounded on the border with Gaza on Thursday. A mortar that was fired from Gaza exploded in an open area. There are no reports of injuries or damage to property. The IDF responded with tank fire into Gaza. On Wednesday, the Israeli Air Force launched an air attack on Hamas military targets. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman communicated, "Israel has no interest in an escalation in the area and does not want to launch an extensive military operation. However, we will defend the security of the citizens of Israel.  Each rocket launched into Israel will receive a strong military response."  

Major Ohad Cohen -Nov, who died after his F-16 crashed on Wednesday, will be buried on Friday. According to the investigation, the aircraft began experiencing technical difficulties upon its return from a reprisal air strike on Gaza after a rocket landed in Sderot. He and his navigator ejected from the F-16 right before landing at his base.  A friend of the family said, "He was a wonderful boy, always smiling."  There is currently no instruction to halt air operations and an investigation into the specific event is underway.

Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was rushed to the hospital Thursday after he felt ill. The Palestinian Authority stated that "Mahmoud Abass' health is good." After Abbas underwent a series of tests, including a cardiac catheterization, his doctors announced that he is in good health.

The Shin Bet and Israel Police arrested 6 Israeli Arabs for attempting to carry out a terror attack on behalf of Hezbollah. The apparent target was IDF soldiers looking for rides on the Israeli highways. The explosive devices were hidden in a grove in Northern Israel along the country’s border with Lebanon two months ago and were discovered by a local farmer. Through a covert operation, the security forces revealed the plot to use drug smugglers who bring goods into Israel from Lebanon to smuggle in the explosive devices. A Hezbollah handler from Lebanon planted the explosives for the local agents to use in the attacks.

The Islamic Movement's offices in Nazareth and Um El Fahem were raided Thursday in a joint operation of Israeli security forces. The movement's bank accounts with hundreds of thousands of shekels have been frozen since one of the accounts was used to finance riots on the Temple Mount.

President Reuben Rivlin and his wife, Nehama, hosted young prisoners from the Ofek prison in their residence on Wednesday. Rivlin stated that he felt it was proper to host them between the New Year and Yom Kippur/Day of Atonement holidays when it is customary to do soul searching. “It is very difficult to ask for forgiveness,” he said. “But, it is even more difficult to forgive. And yet, a society without forgiveness is doomed to stay in the past. It cannot go forward into the future.”
