Dentist refuses to treat HIV patient: "The clinic isn't prepared to treat you"An Israeli citizen will receive compensation from a female dentist who refused to treat him. The dentist explained that the clinic isn't prepared to treat HIV carriers and sent him to be treated in a hospital. The Israel AIDS Task Force stated in response to the incident that this was an incident of discrimination that violates Health Ministry policies.
An Israeli HIV carrier was turned away by a female dentist who claimed that her clinic isn't prepared to treat HIV carriers. The patient felt discriminated and sued the dentist. Now, he will receive compensation for mental anguish.
Last May, the patient attempted to make an appointment at his dental clinic. When he spoke with the receptionist, he told her that his carrier status is undetectable, which means that he can't infect others.
The receptionist called the patient back and said that the dentist said that she can't treat him because the clinic isn't prepared to treat HIV carriers.
The patient felt offended and requested to speak with the dentist. When he confronted the dentist, she explained that the clinic isn't prepared. Later, she told him that the hospital can treat him since they have the required equipment.
The Israel AIDS Task Force commented on this incident: "We are very worried about the unjust discrimination that violates Health Ministry policies. We are disturbed by any form of discrimination but especially from ones coming from medical staff who are supposed to know the regulations."
