Haifa doctors become first in Israel to perform rare jaw surgery on infantAn infant with a rare jaw deformity called Congenital Maxillomandibular Fusion was successfully operated on last week by doctors at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
Doctors at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa performed a rare surgery last week to correct an infant's jaws. This was the first time the procedure had ever been done in Israel.
The two-month-old baby was born with a cleft palate, as well as an extremely rare jaw deformity that only has about 50 known cases in the world.
The condition, called Congenital Maxillomandibular Fusion, made it very hard for the baby to fully open his mouth in order to be fed.
Dr. Adi Rachmiel, the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Rambam, recommended an immediate operation to separate the infant's tissues.
After a recovery, the baby was released home in good condition.
