World AIDS Day: Report shows significant decrease in new infections in IsraelA new report shows a consistent drop in new HIV and AIDS infections in Israel. The Health Ministry continues to push for safe sex.
The Israeli Health Ministry on Friday published an extensive report covering HIV and AIDS cases in Israel from 1981 to 2016. It shows a continuous decrease in new infections, even in high-risk groups.
In 2016, only 361 new cases were reported - a smaller number than in most countries in Western Europe and North America. However, there are significant disparities between different communities. Infections are most common among people who inject drugs, people who come from a high-risk country and people who engage in unprotected homosexual sex.
HIV is considered the number-one cause of tuberculosis, which in turn is the number-one cause of death among HIV carriers.
Despite the encouraging numbers, the Health Ministry calls on all citizens to "use a condom when having casual sexual intercourse."
