A total of 6 suspects were arrested on Monday morning on suspicion of involvement in bribery, fraud and breach of trust, misuse of power and tax offenses. The arrests occurred at the end of a recent covert operation. Among the suspects are a Jerusalem municipality official and businessmen, including a well-known real estate developer and the owner of a large banquet hall in Jerusalem.
According to the suspicions, the official received illegal benefits in exchange for promoting other people's interests. The suspects were brought in by the police for questioning and are expected to appear before a judge at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court for a remand hearing later on Monday.
In addition to the arrests, searches were carried out in the homes and offices of the suspects. The investigation was conducted by the Israel Police in cooperation with the Income Tax Authority in Tel Aviv and with the assistance of the State Attorney's Office for Taxation and Economics.
The police said that they "will continue to investigate and expose improper procedures…and to seek and reach any place where there is suspicion of public corruption that harms the government and normative citizens." The Jerusalem Municipality has denied any knowledge of the political scandal and has offered its full cooperation.
