Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz is considering renaming the Ayalon Highway (Highway 20) after former President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

Yesterday (Sunday), Katz commented on the initiative when he was visiting Peres’ family at the Peres Center for Peace in Jaffa, where the relatives and close friends of Israel’s 9th President are sitting shiva, the traditional Jewish mourning period.

Reporters who were at the shiva asked Katz whether he is thinking about renaming one of Israel’s busiest highways after Peres due to the wave of support for this idea that has flooded social media sites in recent days. Katz replied that he is weighing the option and that he scheduled to meet with Peres’ family after the shiva.
