About a week after the footage of him secretly eating a Tortit candy bar in his cell was released, Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti alluded to the incident and urged Palestinians to continue to support the hunger strike. According to the Lebanese Al Mayadeen news agency, Barghouti called on Palestinians to show their support for the hunger striking prisoners on “Nakba Day.”

According to the report, Barghouti is trying to pressure the Palestinian leadership prior to U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit. Barghouti said that the peace talks will only be effective if Israel officially commits to leaving the West Bank within a specific time frame, stopping the construction in the settlements and recognizing the 1967 borders.

Barghouti also demanded that Israel recognize the Palestinian nation’s right to self-determination, which includes the establishment of a fully sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to the country. “All the blackmail attempts, harsh measures and barbaric conditions in which we live only increase our faith in our victory,” Barghouti added, most likely referencing the Tortit candy bar incident.
