Jerusalem’s Old City: Female terrorist stabs security guard
Not a joke: Could Netanyahu’s dog be called to testify against him? While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joked last week that his dog would even be called to testify against him, it turns out that pets have been used as witnesses in cases involving their owners around the world.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed during his speech on Wednesday night in front of his supporters that the media is soon likely to demand that his family pet Kaia be questioned as part of the “obsessive hunt” against him and his family. While Netanyahu mentioned Kaia as a joke, it turns out that pets have been used as witnesses in cases involving their owners.
About a year ago, a parrot named Bud was called to the witness stand after the prosecutor claimed that the pet may have witnessed the murder of his owner Martin Duram. The authorities in Detroit approved the summoning of the unusual witness after they realized that Bud can repeat what may have been his owner’s last words: “Don’t fucking shoot!”
Bud took the stand earlier this year, recalling the argument between Duram and his wife as he mimicked their voices while repeating their words. It is believed that Bud’s testimony greatly contributed to the conviction of Duram’s wife in the case.
In 2014, a dog named Tango was called to the witness stand in France after it was suspected that he witnessed his owner’s murder. The defendant in the case was instructed to threaten the Labrador with a bat, the suspected murder weapon, so that the court could see the dog’s reaction. However, Tango was not as helpful as Bud: he did not respond to any of the threats, failing to assist the prosecution in the case.
