The Israeli Air Force targeted a Hamas observation post in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday night, said the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit on Sunday. The strike was a response to the rocket fire from Gaza on Friday morning.

“The very serious firing on Friday proved again that Iran, through rogue terror organizations and extremists, is working to deteriorate the regional situation, playing with the lives of Gaza’s residents and may lead to an escalation in the Gaza Strip after years of calm,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement. “Hamas is held fully accountable for the situation and its repercussions.”

In in an interview with Israel News Company on Saturday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that the mortars fired from Gaza on Friday were manufactured in Iran and were supplied to elements in the Gaza Strip. “Three mortars were fired, and this is very serious,” said Lieberman. “Hamas is deterred and does not want an escalation. The problem is that Hamas is losing its power of deterrence against Salafi extremists supported by Iran.”

Lieberman said that the Salafists in Gaza receive support, money and ideology from global jihad extremists and Iran, and are attempting to drag Israel into “an all-out battle in the Gaza Strip.” The defense minister stressed that Iran is the source of the escalation in the entire region, including Sinai, Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria.

As previously reported by JOL, three rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday morning. Two of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome system and the third landed on top of a building in an Israeli town. No casualties were reported. The shooting occurred during a ceremony marking the birthday of IDF soldier Oron Shaul, who was killed during the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict and whose body is still held by Hamas.
