Former Israeli Defense Minister rejects criticism in Operation Protective Edge report
IDF officials report at least 15 active Hamas tunnels along border with IsraelTwo days before the publication of an official report on Operation Protective Edge, Israeli officials say that Hamas currently operates at least 15 active tunnels leading from Gaza into Israeli territory.
Two years and half years following Operation Protective Edge, senior level Israeli officials from the cabinet and elsewhere suggest that Hamas possesses at least 15 active tunnels. According to Channel 2 News, Israeli officials cast doubt on the success of the operation.
The officials stated that Hamas has active offensive tunnels that cross the border between Gaza and Israel. Many recall that immediately following Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014, the IDF proclaimed that all Hamas tunnels had been destroyed. The current figures put that achievement into question.
The statements come two days prior to the official report on the operation that will be presented by State Comptroller Joseph Shapira. The report will detail IDF deployment during the operation as well as the IDF’s current strategies for coping with the imminent threats of underground warfare. The report will mainly focus on the actions of former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and former IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz.
One representative from the committee on Operation Protective Edge said, “Aside from Tzipi Livni, no one came with broad political considerations. They dealt with tactics on how to conquer Rafah. They did not deal with its essence.”
