Today (Friday), following a legal drama, Avi Nissenkorn won 62.42% of the votes against MK Shelly Yachimovich and was re-elected as Chairman of the Histadrut, Israel’s organization of trade unions, for the next 3 years.

“Democracy won,” Nissenkorn stated after the victory. “In the election with the largest voter turnout in the last 20 years, the workers and pensioners have said their word. I accept this position with a great deal of desire to serve them and to create social change.”

Two days ago, a request from Yachimovich’s side was made to stop the count due to claims of irregularities in the elections. These included a break-in to the polls, a lack of ballots and threats made to the voters. Judge Eitan Orenstein instructed the continuation of the count after a break to examine the claims.
