Israeli officials raid air-polluting factories under Palestinian Authority civil controlFor the first time, Israeli Civil Administration officials raided coal manufacturing factories in the West Bank Area B, a region under the Palestinian Authority civil control. The factories produce serious air pollution from which Israelis and Palestinians in the area suffer. The operation was carried out only after the Palestinian Authority failed to take action against the factories.
Today (Thursday), Israeli Civil Administration officials inspected several coal manufacturing factories in the West Bank that have been creating air pollution from which both Israeli and Palestinian residents suffer. The operation was carried out only after the Israeli officials failed to prompt the Palestinian Authority to take action. The operation was approved by Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Major-General Yoav Mordechai.
Mordechai’s decision to approve the operation was unprecedented because no Israeli civilian activities are allowed to be carried out in the West Bank Area B.

The factories, which are located near the Palestinian village of Ya'bad, produce coal from burning wood sold to Palestinians by Israeli farmers. During the inspection, the Israeli officials seized many working tools including 160 tons of wood that were loaded onto eight trucks.
It is important to note that prior to the operation, head of the Israeli Civil Administration Colonel Achvat Ben-Hur warned the Palestinian Authority that if the factories are not shut down, his unit will take action against them.
