The IDF announced this morning (Sunday) that on Saturday evening, the parents of Avera Mengistu received the footage of their son crossing the border into Gaza in 2014. The Mengistu family viewed the footage in the past but only recently filed an official request to receive a copy of it.

About three months after Mengistu crossed the border into Gaza and was taken captive by Hamas, his family members watched the video for the first time when the IDF investigation into the incident was presented to them. In January 2017, the Mengistu family submitted the official request, which was recently approved by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot.

The family received the video in the presence of a senior level representative from the Israeli Defense Ministry and the head of the IDF’s Prisoners and Missing Persons Division in the Military Intelligence Directorate. “The IDF will continue to work tirelessly to return the captives and missing persons to their families,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated.
