The Israel Prison Service and Israeli security establishment are preparing for the hunger strike that is expected to begin this evening or tomorrow morning. The strike is expected to include hundreds of security prisoners throughout Israel and will be led by Marwan Barghouti, a Fatah leader who is currently serving five consecutive life sentences.

“This decision is a very important step,” said Barghouti when he called on all the security prisoners in Israeli prisons to join the hunger strike. “It’s an opportunity to unite all the Palestinian prisoners under one roof.”

The official reason behind the strike is the Fatah security prisoners’ demands, which have been rejected by the IPS. However, Israeli security officials believe that Barghouti’s real reason for the strike is to show that he still holds considerable political power in the Palestinian world.

The IPS has clarified that all of the prisoners who participate in the hunger strike will be punished: they will be separated from the rest of the prisoners and will be denied various rights. The Israeli security establishment is also preparing for the possibility that the strike will precipitate protests and parades in support of the prisoners outside of the prisons.
