Police forces dispatched to Jaffa: Violent riots and clashes with police continue after funeral

As the 21-year-old Jaffa resident was brought to rest tonight (Saturday) after being shot and killed during an early morning police chase, police forces and reporters were met with further violence and rioting. Rioters burned tires and threw rocks at police earlier today in what security forces believe is an attempt by some, to incite nationalistically-motivated clashes and violence similar to Jerusalem.

Police forces reinforced by special patrol units, Israel Border Police and riot control units were dispatched to Jaffa ahead of tonight’s (Saturday) upcoming funeral for the 21-year-old man who was shot and killed early this morning during a police chase. Readiness in the old port city was increased after riots, in response to the police shooting, took place this afternoon in which tires were burned and rocks were thrown at security forces. Three suspects were arrested for questioning during the disturbances.

Earlier today, the Israel Police received intelligence that many youths were interested in confronting the police forces after the funeral procession. As a result, the Israel Police spoke throughout the day with leading members of the Jaffa community in an attempt to prevent violent clashes. However, as expected, riots broke out tonight during the young man’s funeral during which a Channel 2 News reporter and cameraman were attacked and lightly injured before being evacuated to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

"Someone is trying to incite the young people in Jaffa as if the background was nationalistic, even though it was only criminal," a senior police officer told Channel 2 News Online. "The voices and pictures from Jerusalem won’t come here, even though someone is trying to bring them."

The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, around 4:55 AM when Magen David Adom dispatch center received a call about gunfire on Yeffet Street in Jaffa. Police forces called to the scene spotted a number of young men on motorbikes trying to escape the scene at which point a police chase began after them.

Two Jaffa residents in their twenties were wounded and evacuated to Wolfson Hospital in Holon where one was pronounced dead upon arrival and the other’s condition was deemed moderate. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation by the relevant police department.
