First Friday of Ramadan: High alert in Jerusalem
Border Police officers foiled Jerusalem Day stabbing attackA Palestinian who was planning to carry out a terror attack on Jerusalem Day was arrested at a checkpoint as he tried to enter the city on Sunday. He will likely be charged with attempted murder.
It was cleared for publication on Thursday that Israel Border Police officers arrested a Palestinian man at the Qalandiya border crossing on suspicion of planning to carry out a terror attack. The arrest took place on Sunday, which was Jerusalem Day.
The officers were suspicious of the Palestinian man when he presented an expired entry permit as he attempted to enter Jerusalem. When they searched him, they found a knife he was trying to conceal under his clothes.
The Palestinian, a Nablus resident in his 30s, was immediately arrested and taken in for questioning. His detention was extended on Thursday by eight days. The prosecution is expected to charge him with attempted murder, possession of a knife and preparation for a terror attack.
“The vigilance of the officers who noticed that the permit was no longer valid and their thorough search led to the thwarting of the suspect’s plans and his arrest,” the Israel Border Police said in a statement.
