Lieberman says Hamas uses Gaza civilians ‘as live ammunition’ by sending them to riotDuring a visit along the Israel-Gaza border on Tuesday, Lieberman addressed the current tensions with Gaza and said Hamas was responsible for the bomb that injured several IDF soldiers on Saturday. He also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and clarified: “Hamas is taxing Gaza’s residents and is investing all of the money in rockets.”
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Tuesday that Hamas was involved in the detonation of the bomb near IDF forces along the Gaza border on Saturday. Lieberman made the comments while visiting the Israel-Gaza border with IDF officials earlier today.
During the tour, the defense minister met with deputy IDF Chief of Staff and additional military officials of the IDF’s Southern Command. “One thing that is clear is that Hamas is using civilians in the Gaza Strip as live ammunition,” Lieberman explained. “When it sends civilians to clash with IDF soldiers along the barrier it knows the price and it uses those civilians to carry out terror attacks during protests. As far as we are concerned, this is intolerable.” Lieberman clarified that Saturday’s explosion, during which several IDF soldiers were injured, will carry consequences for the terror organization.
The defense minister also addressed the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza and said Hamas uses public funds for terror. “Hamas is taxing Gaza’s residents and is investing all of the money in rockets. It is not prepared to use one cent on the health system or to bolster the water and electricity infrastructures,” Lieberman said. “Hamas officials, who do not lack electricity, food or medicine do not send their families to riot at the barrier.”
“They send the poorest people, those who are in the most difficult situation,” Lieberman continued. “This speaks of Hamas’ nature.”
As previously reported by JOL, a senior IDF general warned Palestinians in Gaza against continuing the border demonstrations. According to him, the IDF “will take more severe measures” against future disturbances along the border.
In the past two months, about 15 Palestinians were killed and more than 400 were injured in protests that took place along the border. “The violent clashes along the border are being used as a cover for terrorist activities,” the IDF general added. “We will not allow this to happen.”
