Jerusalem Sephardic Chief Rabbi’s office decorated with gay pride flagYoung Meretz activists in Jerusalem decorated the entrance to the office of Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem Shlomo Amar with a gay pride flag in protest against his harsh comments regarding the LGBT community.
Jerusalem’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar sparked public outrage when he called the LGBT community “a cult of abomination” during an interview with Yisrael HaYom. Some Israeli politicians called for the government to suspend his salary while others filed complaints against him for incitement to murder. However, it appears that the most creative protest against the rabbi was conducted by young Meretz supporters in Israel’s capital city.
Overnight (between Saturday and Sunday), Meretz’s Hebrew University branch members arrived at the rabbi’s office in Jerusalem and decorated the outside of the building with a gay pride flag. The left-wing activists also used chalk and drew a gay pride flag on the pathway leading to the office.
Head of the Meretz’s Hebrew University branch Gilad Bar-on told Channel 2 New: “The blood-soaked statements of Rabbi Amar are unacceptable to us. The LGBT community is not ‘a cult of abomination.’”
