Thousands of relatives, friends and associates of Binyamin (Fuad) Ben-Eliezer gathered at the cemetery in Holon today (Tuesday) in order to bury the former minister. The funeral took place 2 days after he was pronounced dead at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu eulogized him: “I loved Fuad. He was filled with a combination of vitality, grace, cleverness and a lot of patriotism.”

In addition, Netanyahu spoke about meeting Ben-Eliezer for the first time when he was in the army. “I remember that people would talk about him with affection and appreciation,” Netanyahu said. “The young man who emigrated from Iraq, took part in the Six Day War, War of Attrition and Yom Kippur War and then went on to become the defense minister.”

Former president Shimon Peres said: “Fuad, your friends have gathered here to part from you with deep sorrow. You’ve been buried deep in the fields of Israel. You paved the way by protecting Israel’s borders and towns. You were a people person, a person with many friends.”

Peres said that Ben-Eliezer “proved that we are not a nation that strives for war but rather one that seeks peace.”

Ben-Eliezer’s son Ofir who lives abroad did not attend the funeral. According to Ofir, “the Israel Police said that they would make my life miserable; they made my father sick.” In an interview with Channel 2 News, Ofir said: “I decided against coming to Israel because of the police threats. The police officers who were in the US made sure I knew that they planned to make my life miserable. The reason why they did that was because their interrogation in the US ended with nothing.”

Ofir accused the police investigators of being responsible for his father’s death: “Everyone knows that this investigation and its management were not a success. They wasted a lot of time and because of this, they also buried my father. I’m completely confident that they buried my father. They made my father ill.”
