New footage of Carmel Tunnel crash in which 17-year-old was killed raises suspicion of negligent driving

Last April, 17-year-old Or Elbaz was killed when the bus in which she was riding veered off its lane and ran into the wall of the Carmel Tunnels in Haifa. New footage of the lethal crash that has now been revealed has led investigators to believe that the accident was the result of the driver’s inattention rather than a technical failure.

Half a year after 17-year-old Or Elbaz was killed in a car accident at the Carmel Tunnels in Haifa, footage of the lethal crash has been revealed. In a video that reached Channel 2 News, the bus in which Elbaz was riding can be seen swerving off its lane and crashing forcefully into the tunnel wall. After rubbing against the wall for several meters, the bus is then hurled back onto the other side of the tunnel, where it eventually comes to a halt.

The footage of the incident led Israel Police investigators to rule out the driver’s claims according to which the accident was the result of a technical failure and they now suspect that it was caused due to the driver’s inattention.

Last Thursday, an indictment was filed against the bus driver, a 44-year-old resident of Haifa. The driver was accused of negligent driving, causing death by negligence and causing damage to person and property. 46 other passengers were injured in the accident, six of them severely.
