Syrian media outlets have yet to address Israel’s announcement that the IDF was behind the destruction of a nuclear reactor in a northeastern district of the now war-torn country. Meanwhile, Israeli officials continued to address the issue on Wednesday.

IDF Chief of General Staff Gadi Eizenkot spoke of the operation and said the date the details were made public was symbolic in his eyes, as it coincided with the two-year anniversary since the death the former director of the Mossad, Meir Dagan. According to Eizenkot, the revelation made the Israeli public aware of Dagan’s significant and long-term contribution to Israel’s security.

Yisrael Katz, Israeli Minister of Transportation who also serves as the Minister of Intelligence, congratulated former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for his decision to operate. “The operation and its success have clarified that Israel will never allow nuclear weapons to be in the hands of those who threaten its existence,” Katz said in a statement. “It was Syria then and Iran today.”

Olmert, who has served 16 months for corruption convictions and was been recently released from prison, said during an interview with Ynet News that when Israel’s intelligence community notified him of the nuclear reactor, he decided that it must be destroyed. The former prime minister explained that from that moment, in March 2007, Israel’s political and military echelons began preparing the operational activities, which he described as “unprecedented.”

As reported earlier by JOL, Israel has officially admitted the IDF was responsible for the elimination of a nuclear facility in northeastern Syria in September 2007. Reports in foreign media had declared was behind the attack at the time.
