Following consultations, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman reportedly decided to recommend a replacement for the Coordinator of the Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing in Action (MIA) persons after Lior Lotan’s resignation.

Lieberman’s recommendation to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a senior-level official from the Shin Bet. Today, the official is in charge of the Jerusalem and West Bank region in the agency and will be ending his assignment soon. He is very respected in the defense establishment and is deeply familiar with Hamas and the Palestinian sector.

Lieberman’s recommendation is somewhat unexpected, after he stated that the conclusions of the Shamgar committee should be adopted in full before appointing a replacement for Lotan, a statement which infuriated the bereaved families.
