Watch: Syrian drone intercepted near Israel on Saturday
An Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) approached Israel’s airspace from Syria on Saturday. “A UAV that approached the Golan Heights border was intercepted by a Patriot system,” said the IDF Spokesperson's Unit in a statement.
According to initial reports, the UAV belonged to the Syrian Army and was being used for intelligence photographing purposes. The drone crossed the demilitarized zone area when it was intercepted by the Patriot system but did not cross the Israeli border.
The tensions have been high along the Israel-Syrian border of late, with reports claiming the Israeli Air Force conducted an airstrike earlier this month. According to Syrian officials, anti-tank missiles were launched towards the fighter jets but did not hit them.
In October, the IAF targeted a Syrian anti-aircraft system that launched an SA-5 Gammon towards them. The Israeli fighter jets dropped four bombs, destroying the battery located about 50 km east of Damascus near the Duma Syrian Air Force Base.
