The Tel Aviv District Court sentenced a Palestinian terrorist who attempted to murder an IDF soldier last year to 12 years in prison on Monday morning. The terrorist, an 18-year-old Salfit resident, was also ordered by the court to pay the victim 40,000 NIS in compensation. The terror attack occurred in May 2016 in the Tel Aviv neighborhood of Nahalat Yitzhak.

The family of the IDF soldier who was injured in the attack criticized the sentence, complaining that it is too lenient. “If my son was killed from the stab wounds, the terrorist would have received a life sentence,” the father of the soldier stated. “He received a prize for not succeeding.”

The prosecution also spoke out against the sentence, saying that it had requested that the terrorist be put away for 20 years given that he is a repeat offender who has already been convicted three times of security-related charges.
