After five hours of clashes, the radical ultra-Orthodox Yerushalmi faction’s leaders called upon their followers today (Monday) to stop the anti-draft protests in Bnei Brak. At least 20 demonstrators were arrested during the protests that quickly turned violent, while about 12 protesters and Israel Police officers sustained light injuries and were transported for further medical treatment.

About 1,000 demonstrators gathered this afternoon in Bnei Brak blocking the traffic on HaHalutzim Street in order to protest the IDF’s drafting of yeshiva students. Additionally, several riots broke out in the area between the anti-draft protesters and ultra-Orthodox Jews against the protests. Meanwhile, dozens of demonstrators gathered in front of the IDF’s Jerusalem Recruitment Office and attempted to block off the entrance. The Israel Police cleared the radical ultra-Orthodox demonstrators by utilizing riot dispersion methods and arrested five of them.

As reported yesterday by JOL, protests were renewed after 11 Haredi draft-dodgers were sentenced to prison by the military court. The protestors blocked roads in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak and confrontations with the police were reported.

20 protesters were arrested and taken in for questioning. “It is imperative to protest for the honor of the Torah, which is humiliated by the recruitment of yeshiva students and their prolonged imprisonment,” stated Yerushalmi faction spiritual leader Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach. Following his statements, protesters began blocking central intersections.
