Police have arrested well-known Israeli chef Raphi Cohen for fleeing the country while a lawsuit is being conducted against him, the Israel Police announced Thursday morning. When Cohen landed at Ben-Gurion Airport on Wednesday evening, he was apprehended by the officers. He will appear in front of a judge for his remand hearing in Tel Aviv later today.

Cohen was convicted of assaulting a server who worked for him at one of his restaurants but refused to go to the court hearings about the punishment for his crime. He was eventually subpoenaed but still did not show up. He was arrested and released on bail but failed to appear once again because he suddenly left the country.

In a statement, the Israel Police said that preserving the law is "one of the cornerstones of a democratic state" and that Cohen's arrest demonstrates its determination to bring criminals to justice.
