During a two-hour long speech in Ramallah on Sunday, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas denounced US President Donald Trump and his peace efforts during and clarified that the PA will not accept a US-devised peace plan.

During his speech, Abbas called Trump’s “deal of the century” the “slap of the century” and clarified that the Palestinians “will slap back.” He also heavily criticized the US’s recent recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and declared the city “the eternal capital of Palestine.”

Abbas then said that the Oslo Accords are obsolete and accused Israel of “killing” them. In addition, the leader clarified: “Any future negotiations will be conducted with international mediation, not US mediation.”

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin denounced Abbas’ statements in a post on his Twitter account on Monday. “What we heard yesterday from Mahmoud Abbas, was terrible,” said Rivlin. “He returned back to the ideas he expressed decades ago, when they were no less terrible. He forgot many things, and said exactly the things that led him to be accused years ago of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.”

The defiant speech comes several weeks after the Palestinian leader announced that the PA will not agree to peace talks mediated by the US. “From now on, we are opposed to the US being a mediator or a partner in the peace process,” Abbas said at the time. “We are determined to go once more and even several times more to the UN to receive the status of full membership in the organization.”
