The keyholder of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Adeeb Jawad Joudeh, says he refuses to meet with US Vice President Mike Pence when he arrives to the region next week.

"It has come to our knowledge that Vice President Pence intends to make a formal visit to the church and has asked me to welcome him," Joudeh wrote, adding that he "strongly refuses" to do so. "I will not be present at the church during his visit as a symbol of my condemnation of US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital."

"We, the Joudeh family, have been holding the keys to the church for 850 years," he added, "So far we have kept all of our commitments and welcomed every political, religious and international figure who has asked us to."
