Yesterday (Friday), after it was revealed by UNRWA that a tunnel was dug by Hamas underneath two schools operated by the agency in the Gaza Strip, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon demanded that the UN Security Council condemn Hamas for systematically taking advantage of UN organizations.

The ambassador added: “The cruelty of Hamas knows no bounds as they use the children of Gaza as human shields. Instead of UN schools serving as centers of learning and education, Hamas has turned them into terror bases for attacks on Israel.”

In his letter, Danon claimed that he had warned time and time again against the intentions of Hamas to make use of civilian buildings in a future conflict while putting children in the way of harm. “The UN must act immediately to ensure that their structures and institutions are not being used to harbor the terror infrastructure of Hamas,” Danon added.

UNRWA condemned Hamas and “the existence of such tunnels in the strongest possible terms” while mentioning in the same statement that the tunnel was discovered “during the summer vacation, at a time when the schools are empty.” The statement also revealed that the tunnel has “no entry or exit points on the premises nor is it connected to the schools or other buildings in any way.”
