What does the Syrian Civil War look like from Israel?
Israeli Druze diplomat Mendi Safadi: “If any bomb lands in Israel, we bomb back”Israeli Druze diplomat Mendi Safadi, who heads the Safadi Center for International Diplomacy, emphasized that MK Akram Hasson’s statements yesterday don’t reflect the reality on the ground: “Israel bombs the Assad regime for they bomb Israel and not because Israel wants to support any side.”
Yesterday, JerusalemOnline reported that MK Akram Hasson accused Israel of cooperating with the Islamist terror group Jabhat Al Nusra, which is attacking Druze civilians in Syria. He claimed that by Israel attacking the Assad regime, they are in fact strengthening Jabhat Al Nusra. In response to this accusation, Israel’s Deputy Minister for Regional Cooperation Ayoob Kara stressed that “no one is harming the Druze because they are Druze.”
Today, Israeli Druze diplomat Mendi Safadi, who heads the Safadi Center for International Diplomacy, confirmed Kara’s statement, providing JerusalemOnline with video documentation demonstrating that the true reason why Israel only attacks the Syrian regime and not Jabhat Al Nusra is because they are the only ones who are firing into Israel while Jabhat Al Nusra is not firing into Israel for their bombs are aimed in the opposite direction. According to Safadi, “The Israeli strategy is if any bomb lands in Israel, we bomb back. We don’t want to give them the legitimacy to bomb the Israeli side. Israel bombs the Assad regime for they bomb Israel and not because Israel wants to support any side.”
Safadi was located nearby the Druze who were protesting in Majdal Al Shams who were asking Israel to support the Druze in Hadar: “They didn’t say anything against Israel. They only asked that our brethren in Syria be saved and they want Israel to save them. Maybe MK Hasson doesn’t know what happens on the other side. Maybe he only knows the regime’s side. Sometimes, he says things that are not right. In order to know what happens in Syria, you need to hear from both sides. You need to know the geography of the place where Jabhat Al Nusra, the Free Syrian Army, and the regime are fighting. Only then you can understand what happens there. The Assad regime bombs from the east to west and Jabhat Al Nusra bombs from the west to the east. That is why none of their bombs land in Israel.”
According to Safadi, the root of the problem is that the people who support Assad claim that the entire Syrian Opposition consists of terrorists associated with Jabhat Al Nusra and that this is not true: “Sometimes because of that, MKs say things that make them look stupid for they say bullshit. I am sure that MK Hasson does not have real information and only hears from Assad’s side. I know in MK Hasson’s case, he is not stupid. He is an academic and knows many things but he does not know what happens in Syria. When I say something, I speak with both sides. I check if my information is right or not. But I don’t know why he doesn’t speak with any other side. Every person that wants to watch what happens in Israel can stand from where I stood and see what happens on the other side. Since my family home in Majdals Al Sham is 300 meters away from the Syrian border, I can hear the bombing. At night, we see light from the shots being fired into the air.”
