Lebanese army chief calls on forces to be ready for ‘threats of the Israeli enemy’Lebanese army chief Joseph Aoun urged his troops to be “completely ready along the border against the threats of the Israeli enemy.” Aoun added that the army needs to preserve the U.N. ceasefire agreement “in order to maintain the stability in the region.”
Amid the rising tensions along the Israeli-Syrian border, Lebanese army chief Joseph Aoun released Tuesday a statement that stressed the importance of maintaining the stability along his country’s border with the Jewish state. “We need to be completely ready along the border for the threats of the Israeli enemy,” he explained.
In the statement, which was released in honor of Lebanon’s 74th Independence Day, Aoun called on his soldiers to strongly resist any attempt to use the current circumstances as an excuse for a civil war in the country and continue to carry out operations that thwart the activities of terrorist cells. In addition, he called on them to maintain full preparedness along Lebanon’s southern border with Israel.
Aoun stressed that the army needs to remain vigilant and respect U.N. resolution 1701, which was adopted in light of the Second Lebanon War and bans Hezbollah from operating in the region south of the Litani River. “You need to always be ready to execute the ceasefire resolution of the U.N. along the border with Israel in order to maintain the stability in the region,” he emphasized.
According to Reuters, a senior Israeli official has dismissed the report about the statement. “It’s nonsense,” the official, who asked to remain anonymous, told Reuters.
As reported by JOL on Sunday, Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil was interviewed by the Russian RT television channel Friday regarding the rising tensions between his country and Saudi Arabia. During the interview, Bassil sent a direct threat to Israel: “We should not be provoking Israel into a war simply because it is likely to lose it.”
When asked about the Israeli and American intervention in the regional tensions and the crisis between the Shiite axis in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, Bassil responded: “We should restrain Israel from starting a war exactly because Lebanon is sure to win it.”
