Widespread backlash in Lebanon against foreign minister's remarks about Israel

After he was filmed saying that Lebanon has no ideological problem with Israel, Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil faced backlash from politicians and in Lebanese social media. He later claimed that the footage was edited and distorted.

Lebanese officials denounced Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil on Thursday for comments he made during a televised interview in which he was heard saying that Lebanon has no ideological problem with Israel. He also said Israel has a right to have security.

The remarks, broadcasted on the Lebanese al-Mayadeen news channel on Tuesday, caused backlash and he received harsh criticism from former and current politicians alike, who called for the foreign minister to resign from his post. Bassil later claimed that the network distorted his remarks through editing.
