Lebanon: Israeli barrier wall along border threatens regional stabilityIn a statement on Tuesday, Lebanese government officials said they would act to prevent Israel from building a wall along its border. Lebanon claimed the barrier wall that has been under construction for several years violates its sovereignty.
Lebanese officials said in a statement on Tuesday that they intend to act both regionally and internationally to prevent Israel from building a wall along its border. The statement came after a Monday meeting between Lebanese and Israeli military officials and UN peacekeepers, amid escalating tensions between the countries.
The barrier wall aimed at preventing Hezbollah terrorists from infiltrating into Israeli territory has been under construction for several years. Even though Israel has clarified it is building within its own sovereign territory as designated by the UN “Blue Line” border, the Lebanese government claimed the wall would pass through Lebanese-owned territory.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said on Tuesday that they had discussed “the Israeli threats.” They explained that they have concluded that Israel's plans are detrimental to the region’s stability.
Last week, the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror organization threatened that if the Israeli Defense Ministry does not stop building the barrier wall along the border, the terrorist organization will open fire towards Israel. According to sources in Israel, Hezbollah will pay a “heavy price” if it attempts to escalate tensions in the area.
