UNRWA uncovered Hamas-dug tunnel underneath schools

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees revealed yesterday (Friday) that a tunnel dug by Hamas was found under two schools operated by the agency in the Gaza Strip. The agency condemned “the existence of such tunnels,” adding that it was “unacceptable that students and staff are placed at risk in such a way.”

UNRWA announced on Friday that it has discovered a Hamas terror tunnel underneath two of its schools in Gaza: the Maghazi Elementary Boys A&B School and the Maghazi Preparatory Boys School. In a statement, the organization strongly condemned Hamas for choosing to dig a tunnel underneath the schools.

The statement revealed that the tunnel was discovered “during the summer vacation, at a time when the schools are empty,” so the students were not in danger. The statement also revealed that the tunnel has “no entry or exit points on the premises nor is it connected to the schools or other buildings in any way.”

“The construction and presence of tunnels under UN premises are incompatible with the respect of privileges and immunities owed to the United Nations under applicable international law,” the statement read. “The sanctity and neutrality of UN premises must be preserved at all times.”

Israeli Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Major-General Yoav (Poli) Mordechai published on his Facebook page a statement in Arabic confirming the discovery of the tunnel and quoting an article written in the Saudi El-Awaz newspaper: “Hamas is creating a humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip by confiscating humanitarian aid while endangering the lives of citizens by digging tunnels under schools and hospitals so it can use these citizens as human shields.”

“It is clear that the entire Arab world understands that it is the Hamas terror organization that is destroying the Gaza Strip while eliminating any chance of a good future for Gazans. Maybe it’s time for the Gazans to understand this themselves,” the post reads.
