In a report that was published last night (Friday), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of a real possibility of a war between Israel and Hezbollah.

According to the report, the threatening rhetoric used by leaders of both sides “heightens risk of miscalculation and escalation into conflict” and has caused “increased anxiety, including among the local population.” Guterres called on both parties “to exercise restraint” and refrain from making statements that could spark the region.

The report to the UN Security Council also referred to Israel’s accusations that the terrorist organization consistently receives weapons shipments. According to the report, however, the UN “is not in a position to substantiate them independently.” Guterres referred to a specific case in which Israel informed the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) regarding the presence of Hezbollah weapons in three different structures. However, “no evidence to confirm the allegations was established.”
