UNIFIL to increase forces, inspection methods in Lebanon

Israel continues to fight against the growing power of Iran-backed Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon. US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley pushed forward the expansion of UNIFIL’s mandate on the border.

After US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley witnessed an argument between Deputy IDF Chief of General Staff Aviv Kochavi and UNIFIL Commander Michael Beary regarding the international force’s methods of dealing with Hezbollah, it appears that UNIFIL will need to expand its mandate on the border in the upcoming days.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Dannon promoted the move with a lot of support from Haley. The decision, which will be made by the UN Security Council, is made of 4 parts: a deeper inspection by UNIFIL, including entrance to villages and towns in southern Lebanon, troop reinforcements, real time reporting and increasing the amount of reports transmitted.

In the past, France opposed the expansion. However, it seems that US-led pressure has softened the country’s opposition. Russia is also not expected to act against the move.
