Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to take action amid reports that US President Donald Trump is planning to declare Jerusalem as Israel's capital in a Wednesday speech.

According to the Turkish pro-government newspaper Daily Sabah, Erdoğan expressed his support for the Palestinian cause and said an independent Palestinian state should be established with East Jerusalem as its capital.

On Saturday, it was reported that Palestinian officials had warned the Trump administration that a formal American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would "terminate" the chance for peace negotiations.

According to Channel 2 News, senior Palestinian diplomats Saeb Erekat and Majid Faraj expressed the Palestinian objection to the move in a recent meeting with Jared Kushner, Trump's advisor and son-in-law, in the US.
