Trump suspends US embassy move to Jerusalem
Abbas tells UN chief Trump's Jerusalem plan could destroy peace processThe Palestinian leader has urged the UN Secretary General to intervene in order to prevent US President Donald Trump's plan to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the US embassy there, describing the move as fatal to the peace process.
Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday issued a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres, asking him to intervene in the decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the US embassy there.
"These two moves will lead to a substantial change in the American position on the Palestinian issue," Abbas wrote, "and will significantly disrupt the efforts to revive the peace process."
He added that the move would also violate past US commitments to both Israelis and Palestinians.
"It will harm the feelings of Arabs, Muslim and Christian alike," Abbas wrote, adding that the move is being perceived as "giving an award to Israel despite its continued policy of settlement construction and occupation, as well as its attempts to change the image and the status of Jerusalem."
