An explosive device was detonated Saturday afternoon in the southern Gaza Strip near IDF soldiers who were patrolling the Israeli side of the border fence. Two soldiers were critically injured in the attack. Two other soldiers suffered less serious injuries.
In response, IDF tanks fired at a Palestinian Islamic Jihad observation post near the border. It is suspected that the terrorists planted the device during yesterday’s protest near the border. During the incident, Gazan protesters clashed with the IDF forces on the other side of the border and the terrorists, apparently taking advantage of the situation and the foggy weather, approached the border and placed the device very close to it. They then planted a flag at the spot in order to draw IDF forces to the area.
The Palestinian Authority’s official media outlet Wafa reported that the protesters were demonstrating against US President Donald Trump’s decision to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem and declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.
About two weeks ago, the Israeli Air Force struck two Hamas terrorist targets in the southern Gaza Strip at a site that serves as a military compound in response to a rocket fired at the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council a day earlier. The rocket fired from the Gaza Strip exploded in an open area, causing no casualties or damage.
