Hamas responds to PA official's statement that the Western Wall would remain Israeli

Hamas has issued an official statement following senior Palestinian Authority official Jibril Rajoub’s interview on Saturday during which he stated that the Palestinians know that the Western Wall is a holy site for the Jewish people and therefore should remain under Israeli sovereignty. Hamas’ spokesman called Rajoub’s remarks a “crime against the Palestinian people and their holy sites.”

On Saturday, senior Palestinian Authority official Jibril Rajoub spoke in an exclusive interview with Channel 2 News of the future of Israel and the Palestinians, surprisingly expressing his belief that the Western Wall would remain under Israeli sovereignty in any future peace agreement. Today (Sunday), the Gaza-ruling terror organization, Hamas, responded angrily to Rajoub’s remarks, calling them a “national crime.”

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem issued an official statement on Hamas’ website stating that "Rajoub's actions are a crime against the Palestinian people and their holy places." Qassem continued stating that "Rajoub's remarks are in fact an official relinquishment of these holy sites."

"The statements the Fatah leadership has been recently making will lead to the elimination of the Palestinian issue," the Hamas spokesman concluded.

On the Western Wall, Rajoub stated: “We have no dispute over this. It is clear that this is a holy place for the Jews. The Temple Mount is ours, not yours, and I think that you guys will stop talking this way.”

At the end of the interview, Rajoub asked to send a message to the Israeli leadership: “I appeal to the Israelis and tell them: Guys, it's time to reach the right conclusion - let's do business. Let's change the cassette and pave the way to build a future for our children and grandchildren, where we will treat each other as neighbors and not as enemies. It is up to both of us, but I am telling you unequivocally that with us, you have a partner: Fatah is a partner, Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] is a partner and is ready to sign an agreement - two states for two peoples. Let's spare the suffering and killing - with each person who is killed, a new family is recruited against us. The time has come, and I hope you will understand that we recognize the fact of your existence. You have the right to build your country and live in it peacefully and securely, but within the 1967 borders."
