Liberman rebuffs Abbas’ apology: “Abu-Mazen is a worthless Holocaust denier”After Mahmoud Abbas apologized for his anti-Semitic remarks, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman rejected Abbas’ apology and called him a “worthless Holocaust denier.” Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also commented on Abbas’ remarks and questioned the Palestinian leader’s ability to be a true “peace partner.”
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman refuses to accept Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas’ apology for the anti-Semitic rhetoric during a speech he gave earlier this week.
“Abu-Mazen is a worthless Holocaust denier who wrote his doctorate about Holocaust denial and later published a book about Holocaust denial. This is how he should be treated. His apology is not accepted,” tweeted Liberman.
After Abbas’ remarks were widely condemned by the international community, he released a statement. "If people were offended by my words, especially Jews, I apologize to them," Abbas said in the statement. "I want to make it clear that it wasn't my intention and say that I have the utmost respect for the Jewish faith, as I do for other monotheistic religions."
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, who is on a formal visit to Ethiopia, also condemned Abbas’ remarks. During a dinner at the palace of the Ethiopian president, Rivlin said, “I am compelled to comment on Abbas’ horrendous remarks – How can a leader who expresses such dark anti-Semitic notions present himself as a ‘peace partner?’” Rivlin added that “you cannot produce ‘a dialogue’ with anti-Semitism, there’s no negotiation over anti-Semitism.”
