PA turns to UN Secretary General in attempt to upgrade international statusThe Palestinians proceed with their diplomatic fight, turning to the UN with the request to join 18 international conventions in an attempt to upgrade their international status. Israeli government officials: The move "demonstrates that they are 'abandoning' the American outline and violating their obligations."
The Palestinians will be submitting a request today (Thursday) to the UN Secretary General to join 18 UN international conventions as part of the Palestinian Authority’s battle to enhance its status within the international organization. In the past, Palestinian officials agreed with US President Donald Trump’s administration that they would avoid such measures while attempting to launch peace talks. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon: “We will not sit idly by.”
The conventions that the Palestinians requested to join have only been signed by state entities up until this point. The Palestinians hope that by joining these conventions, they will be able to obtain recognition as a proper country within the UN. Among the international conventions that the Palestinians requested to join were the Rome Convention and the UN Convention against Torture.
In the past, the Palestinians promised that as long as the Trump administration advances a new solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they will not turn to international bodies with the attempt to upgrade their international status. Israeli government officials stated today that the Palestinian’s move “demonstrates that they are ‘abandoning’ the American outline and violating their obligations.”
