Palestinians warn US recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital would 'kill' peace talks

Senior Palestinian diplomats have told Jared Kushner, President Trump's top advisor and son-in-law, that an official US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital would terminate any chance for peace talks. Trump is reportedly expected to announce the policy shift on Wednesday.

Palestinian officials have warned the Trump administration that a formal American recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would "terminate" the chance for peace negotiations, Channel 2 News reported exclusively on Saturday.

This harsh statement come amid reports that US President Donald Trump is considering breaking from his country's longstanding policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital in a Wednesday speech. The White House has not confirmed this, though a spokesperson has told The Times of Israel that Trump "has always said it is a matter of when, not if."

According to Channel 2 News, senior Palestinian diplomats Saeb Erekat and Majid Faraj expressed the Palestinian objection to the move in a recent meeting with Jared Kushner, Trump's advisor and son-in-law, in the US.

Furthermore, Hamas on Saturday reportedly issued a threatening statement to the White House, saying recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital would have dire consequences. The statement stresses that Jerusalem is "a Muslim city" and "the capital of the Palestinian people."
