US 'applauds' Israel's decision to remove new Temple Mount security measures

The White House said in a statement that Israel's decision to remove the metal detectors and cameras at the holy site will "reduce tensions" in the region.

The White House issued a statement on Wednesday praising Israel's decision to remove the new security measures installed on Temple Mount.

"The United States applauds the efforts of Israel to maintain security while reducing tensions in the region," White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered that every visitor to Temple Mount be checked individually using a hand-held metal detector.

Meanwhile, clashes in East Jerusalem continued Tuesday night as Muslim protesters threw stones at Israeli police.

On Tuesday, the Israeli Supreme Court ordered the police to return the bodies of the three terrorists who committed last week's deadly attack on Temple Mount to their families.
