Report: PM suggested to Obama, Kerry that Egypt give Palestinians parts of SinaiIn 2014, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly proposed a different kind of two-state solution, whereby Egypt would be persuaded to give up land in Sinai for the Palestinians, allowing Israel to annex West Bank settlements.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proposed a peace plan to the Obama administration whereby Egypt would hand over parts of the Sinai Peninsula to the Palestinians, Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Thursday.
According to the report, Netanyahu brought up the idea more than once during talks in 2014 with then-US President Barack Obama and then-US Secretary of State John Kerry. Former US officials were quoted in the report as calling the idea "a waste of time" and "a complete non-starter for the Palestinians."
Egyptian officials reportedly told officials in the Obama administration they would not accept such a plan. The Palestinian leadership was never even informed of the idea.
Netanyahu's plan was reportedly to persuade Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Egypt, to give the Palestinians swaths of land in Sinai so that Israel would be able to annex its West Bank settlements.
