US Greenblatt blasts Hamas and Iran
Southern regional council leaders urge government to restore GazaSouthern Israel regional council officials and leaders in the Gaza periphery respond on Monday to IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot’s claim that the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza may lead to the next war between Israel and Hamas. Regional council leaders called on the government to lead an international effort to fix the situation and prevent a potential war.
Gadi Yarkoni, head of the Eshkol Regional Council, said that he believes that "the government should listen to the chief of staff's analysis of the situation, everything must be done to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”
“Gaza is our neighbor and this is our problem, but we cannot bring everything down on us,” he added. “I hope that this will not lead to an escalation that will harm both the Gazans and us."
Alon Schuster, head of the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, said: "I agree with the chief of staff's assessment of the situation. I believe that we must first and foremost demonstrate the appropriate sensitivity as human beings to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Moreover, it is the government's obligation to lead an international effort to formulate a reintegration plan that will include the pooling of international resources."
"This plan of action is essential to the security of Israel and its residents and is consistent with human and Jewish values for the return of prisoners and compassion for citizens in distress,” he concluded.
The IDF warned the cabinet ministers of the Knesset that the situation in Gaza is volatile and although Hamas may not have an interest in engaging in a war, the circumstances may lead to it. According to the defense establishment, the situation in Gaza today is reminiscent of the situation in Gaza prior to the 2014 war.
As previously reported by JOL, Eisenkot focused his briefing about the Gaza crisis on the captured soldiers held in Gaza from the 2014 war with Israel. He stated that their return must come before the rehabilitation plan for the Palestinian people in Gaza.
