On March 15, 2011, the Syrian Uprising began that quickly transformed into a devastating civil war that has claimed over 400,000 victims, turned Syrian cities into rubble and left millions of people as refugees. What is happening today in Syria? What does the future hold? And how could this war endanger Israel? Channel 2’s Ohad Yaari explains.

According to Yaari, in the first phase, there was a popular uprising that called for the overthrow of the Syrian government. In the second phase, the Syrian military started to throw barrel bombs and the rebels armed themselves with the assistance of the Persian Gulf states. In the third phase, Syria received massive military assistance from Iran.

And what is happening now? According to Yaari, the Russians are operating in Southern Syria fairly close to the Israeli border in order to force the rebels to agree to a truce. He claims that the moment the rebels in this area do not receive any kind of serious help from Israel or anyone else, this will open up the Syrian Golan Heights to the Iranian militias and Hezbollah and that is their intention.
